Pronunciation Guides

How a language actually sounds, and how to make those sounds yourself. Each guide starts from the sounds you already say, then works through the ones that are new, the ones learners usually get wrong, and how the language is written down. You do not need to know any phonetics to start — the symbols are explained as they appear.

New to IPA or phonetics? Start with the plain-language IPA guide or learn what a phoneme is.

These guides use the vocabulary of phonetics throughout — phoneme, allophone, minimal pair, syllable, stress, tone and IPA. If any of those are unfamiliar, the terminology section explains them with examples, and the notation guides cover the symbols themselves.
