About these flags
Every flag here is a marker LinguaCommons already uses beside a language, not a country flag. Several are modern community or fan designs standing in for languages that have no vexillology of their own — most of the ancient languages predate flags entirely, and several Indigenous languages are marked with the flag of the US state or Canadian province where the largest speaker community lives.
All flags on this site are unofficial and are used solely as visual markers for language groups. They do not indicate statehood, nationality, ethnicity, or any political or governmental affiliation.
Every question also comes with a written description of the flag’s colours, layout and shapes, which never gives the answer away. Screen readers read it aloud, and anyone can open “Use a text description” under the image — so the game works without seeing the artwork at all.
Ten of these flags stand for more than one language at once — the Maine flag marks Penobscot, Passamaquoddy and Eastern Abenaki alike. Rather than leave them out, the advanced level asks you for the whole set, so no correct answer is ever marked wrong.
